Be An Apprentice at A Just Harvest

A Just Harvest (AJH)  is seeking apprentices for AJH’s  The Accompaniment Project (TAP). TAP provides participants one to two year apprenticeship opportunities to Rogers Park area residents who face employment barriers. Barriers may include those who are justice-involved or face other obstacles to gainful employment. TAP apprentices will work with one of three AJH programs: Urban Agriculture, Community Kitchen, or Community Engagement programs. During their participation in TAP, apprentices will learn program specific job skills. In addition, TAP will offer holistic support for apprentices, including employer paid healthcare, case manager support and coaching, workforce training, and life skills workshops. Apprenticeships are hourly positions for 30 hours per week at $15 per hour, including coaching and training sessions.

In order to qualify to participate you must: 

  • Meet one or more of the following criteria:
    • Be from and/or live in the North of Howard community.
    • Have a barrier to employment, such as a criminal record, no work experience, lack of reportable work experience in the formal economy, etc.
  • As well as the ability and commitment to meet all of the following expectations:
    • Show up to all shifts on time and ready to work.
    • Sign and follow attendance policy in regards to absences or tardiness.
    • Maintain a high standard of work, including working independently and as a team.
    • Be willing to attend general apprentice meetings and coaching sessions.

Program Schedule, Duration & Pay:

  • Apprenticeships are 1-2 years long 
  • $15/hour
  • 30 hours/week

Apprentices programs:

Urban Agriculture (5 positions) – The program aims to create and nurture collective healing through cultivating plants. Apprentices will develop and maintain green spaces, provide mentorship to children in afterschool and summer programs, and grow food for the community. Extensive manual labor is a required. Work is dirty and is performed in all weather conditions including hot, cold, and wet days.

Community Kitchen (3 positions) – The program aims to directly address the food and nutritional needs of the community. Apprentices will fill one of the following roles: kitchen sanitation, veteran outreach or support the food pantry.

Community Engagement (3 positions) – The program aims to deepen relationships and build community by giving residents space to develop the power to improve their lives and the community. Apprentice will organize community building events and support local entrepreneurship in order to spur community and economic development.


Covid Safety:

All apprentices are required to be fully vaccinated and must submit proof of vaccination in order to start work.
